Guide to functional groups

Have you ever thought how many plants or animals are on or around a tree? Step closer and take a look at the richness of the living organisms who are eating, nesting or just resting among the branches, on the bark or leaves, or under the tree in the litter. Listen to how the living beings are changing side by side with the changing of the tree during the different seasons. You can find four illustrations showing examples of the biodiversity associated with the same tree in winter (I.), spring (II.), summer (III.) and autumn (IV.).

This guide is a resource to be used in the activity Tree as a living island. It helps you to get to know different forms of life and recognize the richness, beauty and interrelationships between representatives of biodiversity.
